Kathryn B. Quarles

Associate

Kathryn B. Quarles is an associate with the firm. Her practice emphasizes general civil litigation, including complex business disputes, business torts, employment, real property, professional malpractice, and appellate matters.


Education Background

Ms. Quarles received her B.A. from Stanford University in 2004.  She was a recipient of the Stanford Class of 2004 Award of Excellence, the National Panhellenic Service Excellence Award, and was a member of the Division I Field Hockey team.  She earned her J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 2007. While in law school she was a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society and participated in the Moot Court competition and Kessler-Eidson Program for Trial Techniques. She was also a volunteer for the Homeless Advocacy Project.

Employment Background

Prior to joining Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, Ms. Quarles was a legal analyst in the Corporate Legal Department of Qualcomm, Inc.  She also served as an intern in the Corporate Legal Department of The Coca-Cola Company.

In addition to her work with Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, Ms. Quarles has provided pro bono counsel to indigent asylum seekers through the non-profit organization Casa Cornelia Law Center.  Ms. Quarles represents these individuals through administrative immigration proceedings.  For her work with Casa Cornelia Law Center, Ms. Quarles received the Pro Bono Publico award in 2009, and in 2011 was invited to serve as a Bencher in the Casa Cornelia Law Center Inn of Court.

  • Defended employers against age, sex, disability and age discrimination claims, in addition to defamation, hostile work environment, and wrongful termination claims

  • Represented Fortune 500 companies in defense of age discrimination class action claims
  • Represented business owner in partnership and breach-of-contract dispute
  • Represented employer in misappropriation of trade secrets and violation of non-compete agreement claims against former employee
  • Represented business owners in defamation, fraud, and breach-of-contract actions
  • Represented property owners in trials involving quiet title, easement, and nuisance claims
  • Represented surgeon in defense of medical malpractice and false advertising claims
  • Obtained dismissal of several lawsuits with pretrial dispositive motions, including demurrers, anti-SLAPP motions, and summary judgment motions
  • Counsels employers and former employees on non-compete agreements, termination agreements, and unemployment claims
  • Represented homeowner in professional malpractice claims against architect and engineer
  • Represented German telecommunication company in arbitration with California manufacturer
  • Obtained dismissal of a lawsuit alleging fraud and RICO claims on behalf of a financial institution
  • Represented respondents in appellate briefing and argument, resulting in the Court of Appeal affirming favorable trial court rulings
  • Represented commercial and residential property owners in unlawful detainer (eviction) proceedings
